2026 5th Jeju Biennale l 사전 컨퍼런스 현장스케치 2부

On November 15, the Pre-Conference for the 2026 5th Jeju Biennale was held at Jeju Stone Park.

Under the theme "Memory and Sensibility of an Island: Stone, Myth, and Exile," the conference reexamined Jeju's distinctive natural environment, history, and mythological narratives through the lens of contemporary art.

The first session featured three presentations focusing on the themes of stone culture, mythology, and exile. Professor Kim Jong-il explored how Jeju's dolmens are connected to the megalithic cultures of Northern Eurasia while evolving into a distinct local tradition. Honorary Director Kim Soon-i introduced the archetypal forms and enduring significance of Jeju's mythological heritage. Art historian Choi Yeol examined how the exile of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui to Jeju profoundly influenced the transformation of his artistic practice.

The second session concluded with a roundtable discussion moderated by art critic Hong Kyung-han. Joining the presenters were Professors Jeong Gwang-jung, Kang So-jeon, and Yang Jin-geon as designated discussants, engaging in an in-depth conversation on artistic approaches that connect Jeju's unique cultural identity with universal themes.

The 2026 5th Jeju Biennale is scheduled to open next August. Bringing together scholars, artists, and members of the local community, the conference provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives and further shape the curatorial direction of the upcoming Biennale.

As Jeju's enduring stories continue to inspire new artistic expressions, we invite you to follow the journey toward the 2026 5th Jeju Biennale with continued interest and anticipation.
