The theme of the 2020 Jeju Biennale begins with the oral traditions, recorded materials, and observations of mainlanders regarding Jeju. It focuses on the legend of "Seolmundae Halmang," the creative goddess of Jeju women. Halmang, embodying endless stories, flexibility, and potential, is too big, too many, and too strong. Therefore, the stories that once circulated within Jeju will spread beyond its borders. Through the creative deity and artist that is "Halmang," the Jeju Biennale.

<Tender Moments: Locality and Contemporary Art Scene>

The pre-event "Tender Moments: Locality and Contemporary Art Scene" is a multifaceted cultural and artistic event consisting of a colloquium, participating artist workshops, and a performance by artist Koo Min-ja. The "Theme Research Colloquium," a lecture and discussion program, involves exhibition planners, artists, and researchers who have deeply studied Jeju's history, culture, and contemporary art. The colloquium will discuss the direction of the 2020 Jeju Biennale. Additionally, artist workshops will be conducted for the 2020 Jeju Biennale participants, focusing on local research. These workshops aim to share individual research findings and foster a direct understanding of the Jeju region. Finally, a "Talking Tea" performance by artist Koo Min-ja will be held for Jeju residents and Biennale participants. This performance will involve researching edible plants from Jeju and naturally processing them into tea for the public to sample. This experience aims to provide an element of surprise and unexpectedness through art. These unexpected experiences will be expanded into a broader understanding of contemporary art and serve as a platform for gathering public opinions on the preparation of the Jeju Biennale.
