Dr. Wan-Soo Lim's community mapping

Recruitment for Participants of the Jeju Biennale D-100 Pre-WorkshopCommunity Mapping with Dr. Im Wan-soo on the 17th-18th: "The water we shared"We are recruiting participants for the Jeju Biennale D-100 Pre-Workshop titled "The Sea We Shared.“

Community mapping is a term that combines "community," referring to the local society, and "mapping," meaning the creation of maps. It involves the collection of information on a specific topic directly from the field and the creation of a participatory map based on that data.

Dr. Wan-Soo Lim, a professor at Meharry Medical College in the United States, who is a renowned expert in the field of community mapping and a participating artist in the research section of the 4th Jeju Biennale, gained attention in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy struck New Jersey. At that time, he worked with local high school students to create a "Gas Station Map" that showed available fuel stations. Following this, he established the Community Mapping Center in Korea, and his community mapping techniques have been utilized by various environmental protection organizations in both the United States and Korea.

Dr. Wan-Soo Lim's community mapping is a public project based on collaboration and voluntary participation, where residents collect data and visually represent it to solve various local community issues.

In anticipation of the 100-day countdown to the 4th Jeju Biennale, Dr. Lim will lead a pre-event workshop titled <The water we shared>. The process and the data collected during this workshop will be used to create outcomes that will be exhibited at the 4th Jeju Biennale.

This workshop with Dr. Wan-Soo Lim is a community project that links the exhibition's theme of "drift" with environmental issues in Jeju, such as marine debris and algae, through community mapping (the process of gathering and sharing information on specific topics, like social, cultural, or regional issues, by creating and utilizing maps). The workshop will be held over two days, August 17 and 18.

On August 17, participants will engage in a hands-on workshop, picking up marine debris and experiencing community mapping firsthand. After cleaning up the beach area around Pacific Rim Park and conducting community mapping activities, participants will share their results and discuss future applications.

On August 18, Dr. Wan-Soo Lim will give a lecture at the Jeju Museum of Art auditorium. This lecture, open to anyone interested in community mapping or art, will introduce the concept and activities of community mapping.
